General Topology, V

Let GG be a topological group and let HH be a closed subgroup of GG, contained in the centre of GG, and such that there is a continuous surjective homomorphism φ:R→G/H\varphi : \mathbf{R} \to G/H. Show that GG is abelian [if a0a_0 is an element of GG which is not in HH, observe that there exists a sequence (an)(a_n) of elements of GG and a sequence (cn)(c_n) of elements of HH such that an=cnan+1a_n = c_n a_{n+1} and that the subgroup of GG generated by HH and the ana_n is dense in GG].
