Exercise 3, § 2

General Topology, VI

a) Show that, if ff is a continuous mapping of S1S_1 into Rn\mathbf{R}^n, ff can be extended to a continuous mapping of B2B_2 into Rn\mathbf{R}^n [map the point tx∈B2t x \in B_2 (t≥0,x∈S1t \geq 0, x \in S_1) to tf(x)t f(x)].

b) Deduce that, if ff is a continuous mapping of S1S_1 into SnS_n such that f(S1)≠Snf(S_1) \neq S_n, then ff can be extended to a continuous mapping of B2B_2 into SnS_n [use a stereographic projection whose vertex does not lie in f(S1)f(S_1)]. (*)
