Exercise 6, § 2

General Topology, VI

Identifying S1S_1 with the torus TT, the quotient of R\mathbf{R} by the relation x≡y(mod1)x \equiv y \pmod{1} (no. 4, Proposition 4, Corollary 2), let φ\varphi denote the canonical mapping of R\mathbf{R} onto S1S_1. A continuous mapping ff of a topological space EE into S1S_1 is inessential if there exists a continuous mapping gg of EE into R\mathbf{R} such that f=φ∘gf = \varphi \circ g. (**) A mapping which is not inessential is said to be essential.

Show that the identity mapping of S1S_1 onto S1S_1 is essential (use Exercise 4).
