General Topology, VI

Identify the projective space PnP_n with the quotient space of BnB_n defined in no. 1, Proposition 3, and let φ\varphi denote the canonical mapping of BnB_n onto PnP_n. A continuous mapping ff of a topological space E into PnP_n is said to be inessential if there exists a continuous mapping gg of E into BnB_n such that f=φ∘gf = \varphi \circ g, and essential in the converse case (cf. § 2, Exercise 6). Show that there exists an entourage U of the uniformity of PnP_n such that, if ff is an inessential mapping of a topological space E into PnP_n, every continuous mapping f′f' of E into PnP_n such that (f(x),f′(x))∈U(f(x), f'(x)) \in U for all x∈Ex \in E is also inessential.
