Exercise 7, § 3

General Topology, VI

a) Show that, in the notation of no. 5, the space Ln,pL_{n,p} is homeomorphic to the product of Vn,pV_{n,p} and Rp(p+1)/2\mathbf{R}^{p(p+1)/2}. Note that every matrix X∈Ln,pX \in L_{n,p} can be expressed uniquely in the form U.YU . Y, where y∈Vn,py \in V_{n,p} and U=(uij)U = (u_{ij}) is such that uij=0u_{ij} = 0 whenever i<ji < j, and uii>0u_{ii} > 0 for 1⩽i⩽p1 \leqslant i \leqslant p. Put Y=f(X)Y = f(X).

b) In the notation of no. 5, Proposition 8, show that ff is a homeomorphism of BσB_\sigma onto f(Bσ)f(B_\sigma) [note that X→f(Xσ−1X)X \to f(X^{-1}_\sigma X) is a continuous mapping of AσA_\sigma onto f(Bσ)f(B_\sigma) and that f(Xσ−1X)f(X^{-1}_\sigma X) belongs to the same class as XX mod Δn,p\Delta_{n,p}; then apply Lemma 2]. Deduce that the intersection DσD_\sigma of AσA_\sigma and Vn,pV_{n,p} is homeomorphic to the product of Vp,pV_{p,p} and Rp(n−p)\mathbf{R}^{p(n-p)} [every matrix belonging to DσD_\sigma is uniquely expressible as the product of a matrix of Vp,pV_{p,p} and a matrix of f(Bσ)f(B_\sigma)].
