Exercise 8, § 3

General Topology, VI

Let gg be the mapping such that, for each matrix X∈Ln,pX \in L_{n,p}, X′g(X)X'g(X) is the matrix formed by the first qq rows of XX (q<pq < p). Show that the restriction of gg to Vn,pV_{n,p} is a continuous open mapping of Vn,pV_{n,p} onto Vn,qV_{n,q} [use Exercise 7 a), by noting that if X=U.YX = U . Y then

g(X)=U′.g(Y), g(X) = U'.g(Y),
where U′U' is the matrix obtained from UU by removing the rows and columns with indices >q> q; on the other hand, observe that ff is open].
