Exercise 10, § 1

General Topology, VII

Let aa be a real number and nn an integer >0> 0, and consider the numbers xk=ka−[ka]∈[0,1[(1≤k≤n+1)x_k = ka - [ka] \in [0, 1[ \quad (1 \leq k \leq n + 1). If IhI_h denotes the interval

[h−1n,hn](1≤h≤n), \left[ \frac{h-1}{n}, \frac{h}{n} \right] \qquad (1 \leq h \leq n),
show that there exist two distinct indices k,k′k, k' such that xkx_k and xk′x_{k'} belong to the same interval IhI_h (for a suitable value of hh). Deduce that there exist two integers p,qp, q such that 1≤p≤n1 \leq p \leq n and ∣pa−q∣≤1/n|pa - q| \leq 1/n.
