Bourbaki

Exercise 12, § 1

General Topology, VII

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

For each pair of real numbers (θ,β)(\theta, \beta) there exists an infinite number of triples (p,q,r)(p, q, r) of integers such that r>0,∣q∣≤12rr > 0, |q| \leq \frac{1}{2}r and

−1r<θq+p−β<1r. -\frac{1}{r} < \theta q + p - \beta < \frac{1}{r}.

[If m,nm, n are two integers such that ∣nθ−m∣<1/n|n\theta - m| < 1/n (Exercise 10), take r=nr = n and choose p,qp, q so that pn+qmpn + qm differs from nβn\beta by less than 1/21/2].
