Exercise 13, § 1
General Topology, VII
The Farey series of order ( an integer > o) is the set of rational numbers in their lowest terms such that , arranged in increasing order (i.e., the Farey series is a sequence).
a) Show that if two rational numbers are such that , then every pair of integers can be expressed in the form where and are integers. The fraction belongs to the closed interval with end-points and if and only if and have the same sign.
b) Deduce from a) that if and are two rational numbers in such that and and , then and are consecutive elements in the sequence , where . Furthermore, the smallest integer such that the open interval with end-points and contains a point of is , and there is only one point of in this interval, namely the fraction .
c) Show that conversely, if and are two consecutive elements of , we have (use induction on ).
d) Deduce from c) that, for each real number and each integer , there is at least one fraction in its lowest terms such that and (cf. Exercise 10).
e) If is a fraction in its lowest terms such that , then belongs to the open interval whose end-points are the two terms of the Farey series consecutive to .
