General Topology, VII

Let φ:R→T\varphi : \mathbf{R} \to \mathbf{T} be the canonical homomorphism; let θ\theta be an element of infinite order in T\mathbf{T} and let θ0\theta_0 be an (irrational) real number such that φ(θ0)=θ\varphi(\theta_0) = \theta. For each integer n>0n > 0, let SnS_n be the set of elements kθk\theta of T\mathbf{T} for which 1≤k≤n1 \leq k \leq n, and for each interval II of R\mathbf{R} let N(I,n)N(I, n) be the number of elements of the set I∩φ−1(Sn)‾I \cap \overline{\varphi^{-1}(S_n)}.

a) If we take I=[0,θ0[I = [0, \theta_0[, show that N(I,n)=[nθ0]N(I, n) = [n\theta_0] [note that N(I,n)N(I, n) is then the number of pairs of integers (x,y)(x, y) such that 1≤y≤n1 \leq y \leq n and x≤yθ0<x+θ0x \leq y\theta_0 < x + \theta_0].

b) More generally, if we take I=[0,mθ0[,mI = [0, m\theta_0[, m being an integer, we have m.[(n−m)θ0]≤N(I,n)≤m.[nθ0]m.[(n - m)\theta_0] \leq N(I, n) \leq m.[n\theta_0] (same method).

c) Deduce that, if II is any interval, the number N(I,n)/nN(I, n)/n tends to a limit equal to the length of II, as n→+∞n \to + \infty. (Prove the result first when II is of the form [mθ0+a,m′θ0+a′][m\theta_0 + a, m'\theta_0 + a'], where m,m′,am, m', a and a′a' are integers, by using b); then pass to the general case by approximating to the endpoints of II by numbers of the form mθ0+am\theta_0 + a.) ["Equipartition of the sequence (kθ)mod  1(k\theta) \mod 1"].
