Exercise 4, § 1

General Topology, VII

Let HH and KK be two discrete subgroups of Rn\mathbf{R}^n such that H+KH + K is a closed subgroup. Show that H+KH + K is then discrete and that r(H)+r(K)=r(H∩K)+r(H+K)r(H) + r(K) = r(H \cap K) + r(H + K). (Let VV be the vector subspace of Rn\mathbf{R}^n generated by H∩KH \cap K; split up HH into the direct sum of V∩HV \cap H and a discrete group H1H_1, and KK into the direct sum of V∩KV \cap K and a discrete group K1K_1, using Exercise 3; then show that the sum H1+K1H_1 + K_1 is direct and use Exercise 2.)
