Exercise 5, § 1

General Topology, VII

Let G,G′G, G' be two closed subgroups of Rn\mathbf{R}^n such that G′⊂GG' \subset G, and let VV (resp. V′V') be the largest vector subspace contained in GG (resp. G′G'). Show that there is a vector subspace WW complementary to VV such that GG is the direct sum of VV and the discrete group K=W∩GK = W \cap G, and such that G′G' is the direct sum of V∩G′V \cap G' and K∩G′=W∩G′K \cap G' = W \cap G'. (If UU is a vector subspace complementary to V′V', use Exercise 3 to show that the discrete group U∩G′U \cap G' is the direct sum of U∩V∩G′U \cap V \cap G' and a discrete group K′K', and take WW to be a vector subspace containing K′K'.) Deduce that:

a) The quotient group G/G′G/G' is isomorphic to a product group of the form

Rp×Tq×Zr×F, \mathbf{R}^p \times \mathbf{T}^q \times \mathbf{Z}^r \times F,

where FF is a finite abelian group.

b) Every closed subgroup and every Hausdorff quotient group of a group of the form Rp×Tq×Zr×F\mathbf{R}^p \times \mathbf{T}^q \times \mathbf{Z}^r \times F (FF finite and abelian) are of the same form.
