Exercise 7, § 1

General Topology, VII

Let GG be a closed subgroup of Rn\mathbf{R}^n and let HH be a closed subgroup of GG. Then GG is the direct sum of HH and another closed subgroup KK if and only if HH is the intersection of GG and a vector subspace. (Use Exercise 5 for the necessity; to show sufficiency, apply Theorem 2 of no. 2 appropriately to GG and HH, and use Exercise 3).
