Exercise 8, § 1

General Topology, VII

a) Let H,KH, K be two closed subgroups of Rn\mathbf{R}^n. Show that if r(H)+r(K)r(H) + r(K) is equal to r(H∩K)+r(H+K)r(H \cap K) + r(H + K), then H+KH + K is closed in Rn\mathbf{R}^n. [Using Exercise 7 and the hypothesis given, reduce to the case where H,KH, K and H∩KH \cap K all generate the same vector subspace; if VV (resp. WW) denotes the largest subspace contained in HH (resp. KK), show with the help of Exercise 5 that VV is generated by V∩KV \cap K, and WW is generated by W∩HW \cap H; finally, split up H∩KH \cap K into the direct sum of H∩K∩(V+W)H \cap K \cap (V + W) and a discrete group, by using Exercise 7.]

b) Deduce from a) and Exercise 6 that, if HH and KK are two closed subgroups of Rn\mathbf{R}^n such that H+KH + K is a closed subgroup, then H∗+K∗H^* + K^* is also a closed subgroup.

c) Deduce from b) that if HH and KK are two closed subgroups of Rn\mathbf{R}^n such that d(H)+d(K)=d(H∩K)+d(H+K)d(H) + d(K) = d(H \cap K) + d(H + K), then the subgroup H+KH + K is closed.
