Exercise 9, § 1

General Topology, VII

Let GG be a subgroup of Rn\mathbf{R}^n, not necessarily closed, of rank pp, and let VV be the largest vector subspace contained in G‾\overline{G}. If VV has dimension q≤pq \leq p, show that GG is the direct sum of V∩GV \cap G and a discrete subgroup of rank p−qp - q contained in a vector subspace complementary to VV [note that, for each x∈G‾x \in \overline{G}, (x+V)∩G(x + V) \cap G is dense in the linear variety x+Vx + V].
