Exercise 4, § 4

General Topology, VIII

In Pn(C)P_n(\mathbf{C}) let HnH_n be the "quadric" defined by the equation

x02+x12+⋯+xn2=0. x_0^2 + x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2 = 0.

Show that every point of HnH_n has an open neighbourhood homeomorphic to Cn−1\mathbf{C}^{n-1}, that HnH_n is connected, and that the intersection of HnH_n with the complement of any complex projective hyperplane is connected (to prove this last assertion, reduce to the case n=2n = 2).

Show that H2H_2 is homeomorphic to S2S_2, and H3H_3 to S2×S2S_2 \times S_2 (use the parametric representation of the quadric by means of its rectilinear generators).
