Exercise 6, § 4

General Topology, VIII

Let KK be a non-discrete Hausdorff topological division ring (or field).

a) Endow the left projective space Pn(K)P_n(K) with the quotient of the topology of Kn+1∗K_{n+1}^* by the equivalence relation Δn(K)\Delta_n(K). Extend Propositions 1, 4 and 5 of Chapter VI, § 3, to Pn(K)P_n(K) endowed with this topology. Show that Pn(K)P_n(K) is connected if KK is connected, and otherwise is totally disconnected.

\* b) If KK is locally compact (but not discrete), show that Pn(K)P_n(K) is compact. (Let UU be a compact neighbourhood of 00 in KK; let a∈Ka \in K be such that

lim⁡m→∞am=0; \lim_{m \to \infty} a^m = 0;
let SS be the subset of Kn+1∗K_{n+1}^* consisting of points x=(xi)x = (x_i), all of whose coordinates xix_i belong to UU, and such that xk∈a⋅U‾x_k \in a \cdot \overline{U} for some index kk; show that Pn(K)P_n(K) is the canonical image of SS.)

c) Likewise, extend Definition 2 and Propositions 6 and 8 of Chapter VI, § 3 to the set Pn,p(K)P_{n,p}(K) of projective linear varieties of pp dimensions in Pn(K)P_n(K); \* also Proposition 7, assuming that KK is locally compact [for Proposition 7 consider, for each sequence σ\sigma of indices, the subset SσS_\sigma of AσA_\sigma consisting of matrices all of whose rows belong to the set SS defined in b); show that Pn,p(K)P_{n,p}(K) is the canonical image of the union of the sets SσS_\sigma]. \* Generalize Proposition 9 of Chapter VI, § 3, when KK is a field.

d) If KK is not commutative, let Pn,p′(K)P_{n,p}'(K) denote the space of pp-dimensional projective linear varieties in the right projective space of nn dimensions over K [the topology of Pn,p′(K)P'_{n,p}(K) being defined in the same way as that of Pn,p(K)P_{n,p}(K)]. Show that Pn,p(K)P_{n,p}(K) and Pn,n−p−1′(K)P'_{n,n-p-1}(K) are homeomorphic [to every (p+1)(p+1)-dimensional vector subspace VV of the left vector space E=Ksn+1E = K_s^{n+1} make correspond the orthogonal complement of VV, which is a vector subspace of the dual E∗E^* of EE].
