Exercise 10, § 2

General Topology, X

a) Let XX be a compact space, let (fn)(f_n) be a sequence of continuous mappings X→XX \to X, which converges pointwise but not uniformly in XX to a continuous function (§ 1, no. 6, Remark 2). Show that the set of mappings fnf_n is relatively compact in Cs(X;X)C_s(X; X) but not in

Cu(X;X)=Cc(X;X). C_u(X; X) = C_c(X; X).

b) Let II be the interval [−1,+1][-\mathbf{1}, +\mathbf{1}] of R\mathbf{R} and for each integer n>0n > 0 let u(xn)=sin⁡x+4n2π2u(x_n) = \sin \sqrt{x + 4n^2 \pi^2} for all x≥0x \geq 0. Show that the set HH of functions unu_n is an equicontinuous subset of C(R+;I)C(\mathbf{R}_+; I) and is relatively compact in Cc(R+;I)C_c(\mathbf{R}_+; I) but not in Cu(R+;I)C_u(\mathbf{R}_+; I). (Note that the sequence (un)(u_n) converges pointwise to 0.)
