Exercise 12, § 2

General Topology, X

Let XX be a topological space, YY a uniform space, HH an equicontinuous subset of C(X;Y)C(X; Y) and VV a symmetric entourage of YY. Given a point x∈Xx \in X, show that the set of points x′∈Xx' \in X for which there is an integer nn (depending on x′x') such that H(x′)⊂Vn(H(x))H(x') \subset \overset{n}{V}(H(x)) is both open and closed in XX. Deduce that, if KK is any compact connected subset of XX and if x0x_0 is any point of KK, there is an integer n>0n > 0 such that H(K)⊂Vn(H(x0))H(K) \subset \overset{n}{V}(H(x_0)).
