Exercise 13, § 2

General Topology, X

Let XX be a topological space, let YY be a locally compact uniform space and let HH be an equicontinuous subset of C(X;Y)C(X; Y).

a) Let AA be the set of all x∈Xx \in X such that H(x)H(x) is relatively compact in YY. Show that AA is open in XX (cf. Chapter I, § 9, no. 7, Proposition 10 and Chapter II, § 4, no. 3, Proposition 4).

b) Suppose in addition that YY is complete with respect to its uniformity; then AA is also closed in XX [observe that if x0∈A‾x_0 \in \overline{A}, then H(x0)H(x_0) is relatively compact in YY by considering an ultrafilter on H(x0)H(x_0) as the image of an ultrafilter on HH]. In this case, if XX is connected, then HH is relatively compact in Cc(X;Y)C_c(X; Y) if and only if, for one point x0∈Xx_0 \in X, the set H(x0)H(x_0) is relatively compact in YY.

c) Take XX to be the compact interval [0,1][0, 1] of R\mathbf{R}, and take YY to be the interval [0,1[[0, 1[ endowed with the uniformity induced by that of R\mathbf{R}. Give an example of an equicontinuous subset HH of C(X;Y)C(X; Y) such that the set AA defined in a) is the interval [0,1][0, 1].

d) Suppose that X=YX = Y and that HH consists of homeomorphisms of XX onto itself. Show that if HH is uniformly equicontinuous, then the set AA defined in a) is both open and closed in XX.
