Exercise 14, § 2

General Topology, X

Let Γ\Gamma be an equicontinuous group of homeomorphisms of R\mathbf{R}. Show that if a homeomorphism u∈Γu \in \Gamma leaves at least one point of R\mathbf{R} fixed, and if uu is increasing, then uu is the identity mapping (show that otherwise the group generated by uu is not equicontinuous at a suitably chosen fixed point of uu). If uu is decreasing, then u2u^2 is the identity mapping.
