Exercise 15, § 2

General Topology, X

Let XX be a compact metrizable space, let Γ\Gamma be the group of all homeomorphisms of XX, and let GG be a subgroup of Γ\Gamma which operates transitively on XX. If HH is the centralizer of GG in Γ\Gamma, show that HH is equicontinuous. [Argue by reductio ad absurdum, supposing that HH is not equicontinuous at some point a∈Xa \in X; deduce the existence of a sequence of points xn∈Xx_n \in X and a sequence of elements un∈Hu_n \in H such that

lim⁡n→∞xn=a,lim⁡n→∞un(a)=b,lim⁡n→∞un(xn)=c, \lim_{n \to \infty} x_n = a, \quad \lim_{n \to \infty} u_n(a) = b, \quad \lim_{n \to \infty} u_n(x_n) = c,

where b≠cb \neq c. Hence show that the sequence (un)(u_n) converges pointwise in XX, but that no point of XX is a point of uniform convergence of this sequence; this contradicts Exercise 9 of § 1.]
