General Topology, X

Let XX be a Hausdorff uniform space and let GG be a group of homeomorphisms of XX onto itself.

a) Show that if GG is equicontinuous and discrete with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence, then GG is closed in Fs(X;X)\mathscr{F}_s(X; X).

b) Show that if GG, endowed with the discrete topology, is proper at one point of XX at least (Exercise 18), then GG is closed in Fs(X;X)\mathscr{F}_s(X; X) and the topology of pointwise convergence induces the discrete topology on GG.

c) Let XX be the topological sum of two spaces X1,X2X_1, X_2, each homeomorphic to R\mathbf{R}, so that XX can be identified with the product space R×{1,2}\mathbf{R} \times \{1, 2\}. Endow XX with the product uniformity. For each pair (m,n)(m, n) of rational integers let umnu_{mn} denote the homeomorphism of XX defined by umn(x1)=x1+mα+nβ, umn(x2)=x2+mγ+nδu_{mn}(x_1) = x_1 + m\alpha + n\beta, \ u_{mn}(x_2) = x_2 + m\gamma + n\delta, where x1∈X1x_1 \in X_1 and x2∈X2x_2 \in X_2, and α,β,γ,δ\alpha, \beta, \gamma, \delta are four non-zero real numbers such that α/β\alpha/\beta and γ/δ\gamma/\delta are irrational and distinct. Show that the umnu_{mn} form a group of homeomorphisms of XX which is equicontinuous and discrete with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence, but that GG (with the discrete topology) is not proper at any point of XX.
