General Topology, X

Let H be an equicontinuous set of mappings of a topological space X into R\mathbf{R}. a) Show that the set of upper (resp. lower) envelopes of finite subsets of H is equicontinuous. b) Let vv be a mapping of X into R‾\overline{\mathbf{R}} which lies in the closure of H with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence. Show that vv is continuous on XX and that the sets vˉ1(+∞)\bar{v}^1(+\infty) and vˉ1(−∞)\bar{v}^1(-\infty) are both open and closed in XX (use Exercise 7).

c) Deduce from a) and b) that the upper (resp. lower) envelope ww (resp. vv) of HH is continuous on XX and that wˉ1(+∞)\bar{w}^1(+\infty) [resp. vˉ1(−∞)\bar{v}^1(-\infty)] is both open and closed in XX.

d) Suppose that XX is connected and that there is a point x0∈Xx_0 \in X such that H(x0)H(x_0) is bounded above in R\mathbf{R}. Show that, for every compact subset KK of XX, the set of restrictions to KK of functions of HH is uniformly bounded above in KK [use c)].
