Exercise 9, § 2

General Topology, X

Let XX be a set, YY a uniform space and SS a covering of XX. A subset HH of the uniform space JS(X;Y)\mathscr{J}_S(X; Y) is precompact if and only if (i) for each x∈Xx \in X, H(x)H(x) is precompact in YY; (ii) the uniformity of SS-convergence and that of pointwise convergence coincide on HH. (Apply Theorem 2 by considering XX as a discrete space and reducing to the case where YY is Hausdorff and complete.)
