General Topology, X

a) Let XX be a uniform space, let S\mathscr{S} be a set of subsets of XX, let Γ\Gamma be the group of all homeomorphisms of XX, and let u0∈Γu_0 \in \Gamma. Suppose that for each A∈SA \in \mathscr{S} there exist B∈SB \in \mathscr{S} and an entourage VV of XX such that: α)\alpha) u0−1u_0^{-1} is uniformly continuous on V(A)V(A); β)\beta) the relations u∈Γu \in \Gamma and (u(x0),u(x))∈V(u(x_0), u(x)) \in V for all x∈Bx \in B together imply A⊂u(B)A \subset u(B). Under these conditions, show that u→u−1u \to u^{-1} (defined on Γ\Gamma) is continuous at u0u_0 with respect to the topology of S\mathscr{S}-convergence on Γ\Gamma.

b) Show that the condition β)\beta) may be replaced by the following: β′)\beta') there exists a connected set C⊂XC \subset X such that V(A)⊂CV(A) \subset C and V(C)V(C) is contained in the interior of u0(B)u_0(B). [Show that β′)⟹β)\beta') \Longrightarrow \beta) by reductio ad absurdum.]
