Exercise 16, § 3

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a uniform space and let Γ\Gamma be the group of all automorphisms of the uniform structure of XX.

a) Show that the topology of uniform convergence on Γ\Gamma is compatible with its group structure (use Exercises 12 and 15). Moreover, the uniformity induced on Γ\Gamma by the uniformity of uniform convergence in XX coincides with the right uniformity of the topological group Γ\Gamma.

b) If XX is the compact interval [0,1][0, 1] of R\mathbf{R}, show that the topological group Γ\Gamma defined in a) has no completion [construct a sequence of homeomorphisms (un)(u_n) of XX which is uniformly convergent but such that the sequence (un−1)(u_n^{-1}) is not uniformly convergent].

c) Show that if XX is a complete Hausdorff uniform space, then the topological group Γ\Gamma is complete with respect to its two-sided uniformity (Chapter III, § 3, Exercise 6). [Observe that if Φ\Phi is a Cauchy filter on Γ\Gamma with respect to this uniformity, then Φ(x)\Phi(x) and Φ−1(x)\Phi^{-1}(x) converge in XX for all x∈Xx \in X.]
