Exercise 17, § 3

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Show that if XX is a locally compact, locally connected space, then the topology induced on the group Γ′\Gamma' of all homeomorphisms of XX by the compact-open topology coincides with the topology O~β\tilde{\mathscr{O}}_\beta defined in no. 5 [use Exercise 15 b) and Proposition 12 of no. 5].

b) Let XX be the locally compact subspace of R\mathbf{R} consisting of the points 00 and 2n(n∈Z)2^n (n \in \mathbf{Z}). If Γ\Gamma is the group of all homeomorphisms of XX, show that the topology induced on Γ\Gamma by the compact-open topology is not compatible with the group structure of Γ\Gamma.
