Exercise 21, § 3

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a locally compact space, and let TT be a subset of C(X;X)C(X; X) consisting of surjective mappings. Let T\mathscr{T} be a topology on TT which is finer than the topology of pointwise convergence and with respect to which TT is locally compact, and consider the following property of the pair (T,T)(T, \mathscr{T}): (A) For all u∈Tu \in T and v∈Tv \in T, we have u∘v∈Tu \circ v \in T; and for each u∈Tu \in T the mappings v→u∘vv \to u \circ v and v→v∘uv \to v \circ u of TT into itself are continuous with respect to T\mathscr{T}.

a) Suppose that XX is compact and metrizable, that the pair (T,T)(T, \mathscr{T}) satisfies (A) and there exists a group GG of homeomorphisms of XX which is dense in TT with respect to the topology T\mathscr{T}. Show that the set HH of bijective mappings in TT is the complement of a meagre set in TT. [Note first, using Exercise 7, that every point of TT has a compact metrizable neighbourhood (with respect to T\mathscr{T}). Let (Vn)(V_n) be a fundamental system of neighbourhoods in TT of the identity element ee of GG, and let HnH_n be the set of all v∈Tv \in T for which there exists u∈Tu \in T such that v∘u∈Vnv \circ u \in V_n; observe that HH contains the intersection of the sets HnH_n.]

b) Show that, under the hypotheses of a), the restriction to G×XG \times X of the mapping π:(u,x)→u(x)\pi : (u, x) \to u(x) of T×XT \times X into XX is continuous. [Show first that it is enough to prove that, for each x0∈Xx_0 \in X, there exists u0∈Hu_0 \in H such that π\pi is continuous at (u0,x0)(u_0, x_0), by establishing that this implies the continuity of π\pi at (e,x0)(e, x_0). If VV is a compact metrizable neighbourhood of ee in TT, show next, by using a) and Chapter IX, § 5, Exercise 23, that there exists u0∈H∩Vu_0 \in H \cap V such that π\pi is continuous at (u0,x0)(u_0, x_0).]
