Exercise 23, § 3

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a compact space and let TT be a subset of C(X;X)C(X; X) which is stable under the law of composition (u,v)→u∘v(u, v) \to u \circ v. Suppose that TT is endowed with a topology T\mathscr{T} finer than that of pointwise convergence and with respect to which TT is locally compact; also suppose that, for every countable stable subset SS of TT, the restriction to S×XS \times X of the mapping π:(u,x)→u(x)\pi : (u, x) \to u(x) of T×XT \times X into XX is continuous. Show that, under these conditions, π\pi is continuous on T×XT \times X. [Let VV be a compact subset of TT (with respect to T\mathscr{T}); show that, for each countable subset DD of VV, the closure of DD with respect to T\mathscr{T} is contained in the closure of DD with respect to the topology of uniform convergence, by using Corollary 1 of Theorem 3 (no. 4). Deduce that VV is relatively compact in Cu(X;X)\mathscr{C}_u(X; X) (Chapter II, § 4, Exercise 6), and hence equicontinuous.]
