Exercise 25, § 3

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let GG be a group endowed with a topology T\mathscr{T} with respect to which GG is locally compact and the translations t→stt \to st and t→tst \to ts are continuous on GG for all s∈Gs \in G. Show that T\mathscr{T} is compatible with the group structure of GG (Theorem of R. Ellis). [Identify GG with the group of left translations of GG, endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence, so that GG is identified with a group of homeomorphisms of the one-point compactification XX of GG, endowed with the topology of pointwise convergence. Using Exercise 24, deduce that on GG the topology of pointwise convergence in XX is the same as the topology of uniform convergence in XX (no. 4, Theorem 3, Corollary 1), and use Proposition 11 of no. 5.]
