Bourbaki

Exercise 26, § 3

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

a) Let XX be a locally compact uniform space, GG a group of homeomorphisms of XX, and TT the closure of GG in Cs(X;X)\mathscr{C}_s(X; X). Show that TT is compact with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence and is a group of homeomorphisms if and only if GG is relatively compact in Cc(X;X)\mathscr{C}_c(X; X). [Use Exercises 12 and 24 and the Corollary to Theorem 4 (no. 5).]

b) Let GG be a locally compact, non-compact topological group and let XX be its one-point compactification; GG can be identified with a group of homeomorphisms of XX. Show that GG is not equicontinuous, although its closure in Cs(X;X)\mathscr{C}_s(X; X) is compact.
