General Topology, X

Let XX be a Hausdorff uniform space and let GG be an equicontinuous group of homeomorphisms of XX.

a) A point x0∈Xx_0 \in X is said to be almost periodic with respect to GG if the orbit of x0x_0 with respect to GG is relatively compact in XX. Let YY be the (compact) closure of this orbit in XX; then u(Y)⊂Yu(Y) \subset Y for all u∈Gu \in G. Let u~\tilde{u} be the restriction of uu to YY considered as an element of C(Y;Y)\mathscr{C}(Y; Y); show that u~\tilde{u} is a homeomorphism of YY onto itself and that the closure Γ\Gamma in Cu(Y;Y)\mathscr{C}_u(Y; Y) of the image of GG under the mapping u→u~u \to \tilde{u} is a compact group of homeomorphisms (no. 6, Theorem 4, Corollary) which is transitive on YY.

b) Suppose that X is complete. Then x0x_0 is almost periodic with respect to G if and only if, for each neighbourhood V of x0x_0 in X, there is a finite number of elements ui∈Gu_i \in G such that, for all u∈Gu \in G, we have ui−1(u(x0))∈Vu_i^{-1}(u(x_0)) \in V for at least one index i.

c) Suppose that x0x_0 is almost periodic and that G is endowed with a topology compatible with its group structure. With the notation of a), the mapping u→uˉu \to \bar{u} of G into Γ\Gamma (endowed with the topology of uniform convergence) is continuous if and only if, for each pair of distinct points x,yx, y of Y, there is a neighbourhood U of e in G and a neighbourhood V of y such that the relation u∈Uu \in U implies u(x)∉Vu(x) \notin V [use the fact that the topologies induced on Γ\Gamma by those of Cu(Y;Y)C_u(Y; Y) and Cs(Y;Y)C_s(Y; Y) are the same].
