Exercise 3, § 3

General Topology, X

Let XX be a metric space, dd the metric on XX. For each x∈Xx \in X let dxd_x be the real-valued function y→d(x,y)y \to d(x, y) which is continuous on XX. Show that the mapping x→dxx \to d_x is an isometry of XX onto a subspace of Cu(X;R)\mathscr{C}_u(X; \mathbf{R}) [endowed with the pseudometric δ(u,v)=sup⁡x∈X∣u(x)−v(x)∣\delta(u, v) = \sup_{x \in X} |u(x) - v(x)|].
