Exercise 11, § 4

General Topology, X

a) Let XX be a completely regular space and let YY be a closed subspace of XX; the mapping φ:u→u∣Y\varphi : u \to u|Y of C∞(X;R)C^\infty(X; \mathbf{R}) into C∞(Y;R)C^\infty(Y; \mathbf{R}) is a continuous linear mapping of norm ≤1\leq 1. If XX is normal, φ\varphi is a surjective strict morphism; and if XYX_Y denotes the quotient space of XX obtained by identifying all the points of YY (XYX_Y is normal by Exercise 15 of Chapter IX, § 4), then the kernel of φ\varphi can be identified (as a normed space) with the subspace of C∞(XY;R)C^\infty(X_Y; \mathbf{R}) consisting of functions which vanish at ω\omega, the canonical image of YY in XYX_Y.

b) Suppose that XX is metrizable and that the frontier of YY in XX is of countable type. Show that φ:u→u∣Y\varphi : u \to u|Y is a strict morphism which has a right inverse (Chapter III, § 6, no. 2, Proposition 3). [Let dd be a metric compatible with the topology of XX; let (an)(a_n) be a sequence of points of Fr(Y)Fr(Y), dense in Fr(Y)Fr(Y), and let Vn,mV_{n,m} be the set of points x∈Xx \in X such that d(x,an)<1/md(x, a_n) < 1/m and d(x,Y)>1/2md(x, Y) > 1/2m; construct a family of continuous mappings fn,m:X→[0,1]f_{n,m} : X \to [0, 1] such that the support of fn,mf_{n,m} is contained in Vn,mV_{n,m} and such that ∑n,mfn,m(x)=1\sum_{n,m} f_{n,m}(x) = 1 for all x∈CYx \in C Y, the family (fn,m)(f_{n,m}) being uniformly summable in some neighbourhood of each point of CYC Y. Show then that, for every v∈C∞(Y;R)v \in C^\infty(Y; \mathbf{R}), the function uu which coincides with vv on YY and is equal to ∑n,mv(an)fn,m(x)\sum_{n,m} v(a_n) f_{n,m}(x) for all x∈CYx \in C Y belongs to C∞(X;R)C^\infty(X; \mathbf{R}) and is such that φ(u)=v\varphi(u) = v.] (*)
