Bourbaki

Exercise 19, § 4

General Topology, X

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let XX be a compact space, and let AA be the normed C\mathbf{C}-algebra C(X;C)C(X; \mathbf{C}). For each closed ideal aa of AA, show that the relation f∈af \in a implies f‾∈a\overline{f} \in a (note that f‾\overline{f} is the uniform limit of functions of the form gfgf). Extend the results of Exercise 13 to the algebra AA.
