Algebra, VIII, p. 77, § 5. Commutation
The A-module M is balanced if we have .
If the A-module M is balanced, then the rings and have the same center . The module M is a balanced A-module if and only if it is a balanced -module. The countermodule of an A-module M is faithful and balanced.
When the ring A is commutative, the bicommutant of M is the center of End; that M is balanced means that the center of End is reduced to the homotheties.
For any element of A, denote by the right homothety from A to A and by the left homothety (I, §8, No. 1, p. 97). The map is a ring isomorphism from to the commutant of the left A-module (cf. II, §10, No. 7, p. 349, applied to ). The map is a ring isomorphism from A to the commutant of the right A-module (loc. cit.). If we identify A with the commutant of through this map, then the countermodule of is identified with ; consequently, the A-module is balanced. Likewise, the A-module is balanced.
Let be an integer . We view as a left (A)-module (loc. cit.). The mapping that sends to the endomorphism of the A-module is a ring isomorphism from to the commutant of the right A-module (loc. cit.).
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
