Algebra, VIII, p. 169

Let K be a commutative field and L a set. a) Prove that there exists a K-algebra A admitting a basis consisting of the unit element, a family (cλ)λ∈L(c_{\lambda})_{\lambda\in L}, and a family (rλμ)(λ,μ)∈L×L(r_{\lambda \mu})_{(\lambda ,\mu)\in L\times L}, with multiplication table

cλ2=cλ,cλcμ=rλμc^2_{\lambda}=c_{\lambda},c_{\lambda}c_\mu=r_{\lambda \mu} if λ≠μ\lambda \not=\mu

cλrμν=δλμrμν,rλμcν=δμνrλμ c_{\lambda}r_{\mu\nu}=\delta_{\lambda \mu}r_{\mu\nu},r_{\lambda \mu}c_{\nu}=\delta_{\mu\nu}r_{\lambda \mu}
rλμrνρ=0 r_{\lambda \mu}r_{\nu \rho}= 0

where δμν\delta_{\mu\nu} is the Kronecker delta function. Prove that R(A)\mathfrak{R}(A) is the subalgebra of A generated by the rλμr_{\lambda \mu}; we have R(A)2=0\mathfrak{R}(A)^2= 0. b) Suppose Card(L) ⩾2\geqslant 2. Prove that the center Z of A is the K-vector space generated by 1, the rλλr_{\lambda \lambda} for λ∈L\lambda \in L, and, if L is finite, the element ∑λcλ−∑μ≠νrμν\sum_{\lambda}c_{\lambda}-\sum_{\mu\not=\nu}r_{\mu\nu}. Deduce that for λ∈L\lambda \in L, there are no idempotents in Z congruent to cλc_{\lambda} (mod R(A)\mathfrak{R}(A)).
