Algebra, VIII, p. 170

Let A be a ring, u:P→Mu: P\rightarrow M a surjective homomorphism of A-modules, and N its kernel. We denote by EndA(P;N)_A(P; N) (resp. AutA(P;N)_A(P; N)) the ring of endomorphisms (resp. the group of automorphisms) uu of P such that u(N)⊂Nu(N)\subset N.

a) Define an exact sequence

0→0\rightarrow HomA(P,N)→i_A(P,N)\rightarrow^i EndA(P;N)→p_A(P; N)\rightarrow^p EndA(M)_A(M)

where the image of ii is a two-sided ideal I\mathfrak{I} of the ring EndA(P;N)_A(P; N).

b) Suppose that (P,u)(P, u) is a projective cover of M. Then pp is surjective and induces a surjective homomorphism p′:p': AutA(P;N)→_A(P; N)\rightarrow AutA(M)_A(M). We have an exact sequence of groups

0→1P+I→0\rightarrow 1_P+\mathfrak{I}\rightarrow AutA(P;N)→p′_A(P; N)\rightarrow^{p'} AutA(M)→0_A(M)\rightarrow 0;

if P is free and N is not reduced to 0, then the homomorphism p′p' is not injective.
