Algebra, VIII, p. 183, § 11. Grothendieck Groups

We say that the set C\mathscr{C} of classes of A-modules is additive if every zero module is of type C\mathscr{C} and the direct sum of two modules of type C\mathscr{C} is of type C\mathscr{C}. We say that C\mathscr{C} is hereditary if it is additive and the submodules and quotient modules of a module of type C\mathscr{C} are of type C\mathscr{C}.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
