Algebra, VIII, p. 186, § 11. Grothendieck Groups

∗* Let A be a Noetherian commutative ring, and let Σ be its spectrum. For any integer n⩾0n\geqslant 0, denote by C⩾n\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n} the set of classes of finitely generated A-modules with support of codimension ⩾n\geqslant n in Σ. Set K(n,A)=K(n,A) = K(C⩾n)K(\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n}) and γn=γC⩾n,C⩾n+1\gamma_n=\gamma_{\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n},\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n+1}}. We have a sequence of homomorphisms

γn:K(n+1,A)⟶K(n,A) \gamma_n: K(n+ 1,A)\longrightarrow K(n,A)

We can prove (AC, VIII, §1, no5^o5, p. 13, proposition 10) that in K(n,A)K(n,A), the elements [A/p]Cn[A/\mathfrak{p}]_{\mathscr{C}_n}, where p\mathfrak{p} runs through the set of elements of Σ of height nn, form a basis of a Z\mathbf{Z}-module supplementary to the image of γn\gamma_n. More precisely, for every module E of type C⩾n\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n}, we have

[E]C⩾n≡∑[E]_{\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n}}\equiv \sum longAp(Ep)⋅[A/p]C⩾n_{A_{\mathfrak{p}}}(E_{\mathfrak{p}})\cdot [A/\mathfrak{p}]_{\mathscr{C}^{\geqslant n}} (mod Im γn\gamma_n).∗.*

{p∈Σ∣\{\mathfrak{p}\in \Sigma |ht(p\mathfrak{p})=n}=n\}

The group K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) is generated by the elements of the form [E]C[E]_{\mathscr{C}} with E∈CE\in \mathscr{C}, and we have [E⊕E′]C=[E]C+[E′]C[E\oplus E']_{\mathscr{C}}= [E]_{\mathscr{C}}+ [E']_{\mathscr{C}} by relation (1) (VIII, p. 184). Every element of K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) is therefore of the form [E]C−[F]C[E]_{\mathscr{C}}-[F]_{\mathscr{C}}, where E and F belong to C\mathscr{C}.

An element of K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) is called effective if it is of the form [E]C[E]_{\mathscr{C}} for an A-module E of type C\mathscr{C}. The set of effective elements of K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) is denoted by K(C)+K(\mathscr{C})^+; it is a submonoid of K(C)K(\mathscr{C}), and K(C)K(\mathscr{C}) can be identified with the group of differences of K(C)+K(\mathscr{C})^+ (I, §2, No. 4, p. 20).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
