Algebra, VIII, p. 195, § 11. Grothendieck Groups
Let S and T be two nonisomorphic simple A-modules that are finite-dimensional over K. The supports of the -modules and are disjoint.
By Lemma 2, there exists an element such that and . The element of acts as 0 on and as 1 on . By Lemma 2, the supports of the -modules and are disjoint.
Let us prove Theorem 1. Let be the set of classes of simple A-modules that are finite-dimensional over K. The family is a basis of the -module . Let . The -module is not zero, so its support is not empty. Let be an element of this support. By Lemma 1 of VIII, p. 190, there exists a homomorphism such that for every -module E that is finite-dimensional over L. We have by construction and for every by Lemma 3. We have therefore proved that the elements of of the form for are linearly independent over . It follows that the homomorphism is injective.
Let , and let be an element of the support of . For every (A), the coordinate of of index [S] in the basis is . It follows that if is effective, then so is .
Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
