Algebra, VIII, p. 338, § 17. Reduced Norms and Traces

Since the mapping crc_r from End(M) to L is a homogeneous polynomial mapping of degree rr for 0⩽r⩽m−10\leqslant r\leqslant m-1, it follows from formula (6) that the mapping u↦u~u\mapsto \widetilde{u} from End(M) to End(M) is a homogeneous polynomial mapping of degree m−1m-1.

Let B be an algebra over the ring L; suppose that B is a free L-module of rank m⩾1m\geqslant 1, and identify L with the subring L⋅1L\cdot 1 of B. Let bb be an element of B. We apply the above to the endomorphism γ(b):x↦bx\gamma (b) :x\mapsto bx of the L-module B. Set γr(b)=cr(γ(b))\gamma_r(b) =c_r(\gamma (b)) for 0⩽r⩽m0\leqslant r\leqslant m; we have, in particular, γm(b)=NB/L(b)\gamma_m(b) = N_{B/L}(b) (III, §9, No. 3, p. 543). The characteristic polynomial of bb (loc. cit.) can be written as

(16) PcB/L(b;X)=∑r=0m(−1)rγr(b)Xm−r_{B/L}(b; X) =\sum_{r=0}^m(-1)^r\gamma_r(b) X^{m-r}.

Since the mapping γ\gamma from B to EndL(B)_L(B) is L-linear, the mapping γr\gamma_r from B to L is a homogeneous polynomial mapping of degree rr. In particular, the mapping b↦NB/L(b)b\mapsto N_{B/L}(b) from B to L is a homogeneous polynomial mapping of degree mm.

For any element bb of B, set

b~=∑r=0m−1(−1)rγm−1−r(b)br(17) \widetilde{b}=\sum^{m-1}_{r=0}(-1)^r\gamma_{m-1-r}(b)b^r \tag{17}

By Proposition 1, the linear mapping γ(b~)\gamma (\widetilde{b}) from B to B is the cotranspose of the mapping γ(b)\gamma (b); from this, we deduce

bb~=b~b=NB/L(b)(18) b\widetilde{b}=\widetilde{b}b= N_{B/L}(b) \tag{18}

Moreover, the mapping b↦b~b\mapsto \widetilde{b} from B to B is a homogeneous polynomial mapping of degree m−1m-1.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
