Algebra, VIII, p. 410, § 21. Linear Representations of Finite Groups

Let π\pi and π′\pi ' be finite-dimensional linear representations of G. In the field K, we have

(29) ⟨χπ,χπ′⟩G=\langle \chi_{\pi}, \chi_{\pi'}\rangle_G= (dimK_K HomG(π,π′)_G(\pi , \pi '))⋅1\cdot 1.

We first suppose that π\pi and π′\pi ' are simple representations. The vector space HomG(π,π′)_G(\pi , \pi ') has dimension 1 or 0 according to whether or not π\pi and π′\pi ' are isomorphic (Schur’s lemma, VIII, p. 47, Proposition 2). In this case, formula (29) follows from Proposition 4.

In the general case, the representation π\pi (resp. π′\pi ') is the direct sum of simple representations π1,...,πm\pi_1, . . . , \pi_m (resp. π1′,...,πn′\pi '_1, . . . , \pi '_n). The space HomG(π,π′)_G(\pi , \pi ') is isomorphic to the direct sum of the spaces HomG(πi,πj′)_G(\pi_i, \pi '_j) for 1⩽i⩽m1\leqslant i\leqslant m, 1⩽j⩽n1\leqslant j\leqslant n, and we have

χπ=χπ1+⋯+χπm,χπ′=χπ1′+⋯+χπn′ \chi_{\pi}=\chi_{\pi_1}+\cdots +\chi_{\pi_m},\chi_{\pi'}=\chi_{\pi'_1}+\cdots +\chi_{\pi'_n}

By linearity, the proof of formula (29) is reduced to the case of simple representations.

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
