Algebra, VIII, p. 434

Keep the assumptions and notation of Exercises 27 and 28. Choose a primitive mm-th root of unity ζ\zeta. Let Om\mathscr{O}_m be the ring Z[X]/(Φm)\mathbf{Z}[X]/(\Phi_m) (VIII, p. 415); we denote the class of X in Om\mathscr{O}_m by xx. Let φ:Om→F\varphi :\mathscr{O}_m\rightarrow F be the homomorphism that sends xx to ζ\zeta. It induces an isomorphism from the subgroup of Om\mathscr{O}_m generated by xx to the group μm(F)\mu_m(F); we denote the inverse isomorphism by τ\tau.

a) Let π\pi be a linear representation of G over F, of finite dimension dd. For g∈Gg\in G, let Pg(X)=∏i=1d(X−λi)P_g(X) =\prod^d_{i=1}(X-\lambda_i) be the characteristic polynomial of π(g)\pi (g); denote by βπ(g)\beta_{\pi}(g) the element ∑iτ(λi)\sum_i\tau (\lambda_i) of Om\mathscr{O}_m. The resulting function βπ:G→Om\beta_{\pi}: G\rightarrow \mathscr{O}_m is called the Brauer character of π\pi; we have φ∘βπ=χπ\varphi \circ \beta_{\pi}=\chi_{\pi} and βπ(x)=βπ(xs)\beta_{\pi}(x) =\beta_{\pi}(x_s) for every xx, so that βπ\beta_{\pi} is determined by its restriction to GregG^{reg}.

b) Let G^\widehat{G} be the set of isomorphism classes of simple F[G]-modules. Prove that the functions (βλ)λ∈G^(\beta_{\lambda})_{\lambda\in\widehat{G}} are linearly independent over Z\mathbf{Z}. (If there exists a nontrivial relation ∑nλβλ=0\sum n_{\lambda}\beta_{\lambda}= 0, then we may assume that one of the nλn_{\lambda} is prime to pp and apply φ\varphi to arrive at a contradiction using Exercise 27, f).)

c) Let B\mathscr{B} be the set of functions from GregG^{reg} to Om\mathscr{O}_m; the homomorphism RF(G)→BR_F(G)\rightarrow \mathscr{B} that sends the class of π\pi to βπ\beta_{\pi} is injective. Deduce that two semisimple F[G]-modules are isomorphic if and only if their Brauer characters are equal.
