Algebra, VIII, p. 465, Appendix 4. Trace of an Endomorphism of Finite Rank

Let E be a projective A-module.

a) Let u∈u\in EndAf(E)^f_A(E). Let F be a projective A-submodule of E containing Im uu, and let uFu_F be the endomorphism of F induced by uu. We have

(5) det(1E+u_E+u) == det(1F+uF_F+u_F).

b) Let uu and vv be two elements of EndAf(E)^f_A(E). We have

(6) det (1E+u)∘(1E+v)(1_E+u)\circ (1_E+v) = det(1E+u_E+u) det(1E+v_E+v).

Let us prove a). For every integer p⩾0p\geqslant 0, the projective A-module ∧pF\wedge^pF can be identified with a submodule of ∧pE\wedge^pE (III, §7, No. 9, p. 520, Corollary). The image of ∧pu\wedge^pu is contained in ∧pF\wedge^pF, and the endomorphism of ∧pF\wedge^pF induced by ∧pu\wedge^pu is equal to ∧puF\wedge^pu_F. We consequently have Tr(∧pu\wedge^pu) == Tr(∧puF\wedge^pu_F) by the corollary of Proposition 2, and therefore a).

Let us prove b). Let G be an A-module such that the A-module L=E⊕GL = E\oplus G is free. Denote by u′u' and v′v' the endomorphisms u⊕0Gu\oplus 0_G and v⊕0Gv\oplus 0_G of L. By a), we have the relations det(1L+u′_L+u') == det(1E+u_E+u), det(1L+v′_L+v') == det(1E+v_E+v), and

det(1L+u′+v′+u′∘v′_L+u'+v'+u'\circ v') == det(1E+u+v+u∘v_E+u+v+u\circ v).

It therefore suffices to prove assertion b) when the A-module E is free. There then exists a finitely generated free submodule F of E that contains the image of uu and that of vv. Set w=u+v+u∘vw=u+v+u\circ v. The image of ww is contained in F, and we have wF=uF+vF+uF∘vFw_F=u_F+v_F+u_F\circ v_F. Therefore, by (5), we have det(1E+u_E+u) == det(1F+uF_F+u_F), det(1E+v_E+v) == det(1F+vF_F+v_F), and

det((1E+u)∘(1E+v))((1_E+u)\circ (1_E+v))

= det(1E+w_E+w) == det(1F+wF_F+w_F) == det((1F+uF_F+u_F)∘(1F+vF)\circ (1_F+v_F)).

Since F is a finitely generated free A-module, we have

det((1F+uF_F+u_F)∘(1F+vF)\circ (1_F+v_F)) == det(1F+uF_F+u_F) det(1F+vF_F+v_F) == det(1E+u_E+u) det(1E+v_E+v).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
