Algebra, VIII, p. 340, § 17. Reduced Norms and Traces

Let aa be an element of the algebra A. The reduced characteristic polynomial of aa (with respect to A) is the unique monic polynomial in K[X], denoted by PcrdA/K(a;X)_{A/K}(a; X), that satisfies the relation

(20) PcA/K(a;X)=_{A/K}(a; X) = PcrdA/K(a;X)n_{A/K}(a; X)^n.

Let aa be an element of A. Since A has degree n2n^2 over K, the polynomial PcA/K(a;X)_{A/K}(a; X) has degree n2n^2, so PcrdA/K(a;X)_{A/K}(a; X) is a monic polynomial of degree nn; let us write it as

(21) PcrdA/K(a;X)=Xn+∑r=0n−1(−1)rbr(a)Xn−r_{A/K}(a; X) = X^n+\sum^{n-1}_{r=0}(-1)^rb_r(a)X^{n-r}.

We set

(22) TrdA/K(a)=b1(a)_{A/K}(a) =b_1(a), NrdA/K(a)=bn(a)_{A/K}(a) =b_n(a).

Bourbaki sets the proof directly after the statement, and the corpus does not separate them, so what is above is the statement and its proof together.
