Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 58

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra, a\mathfrak{a} an ideal of g,h\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{h} a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} and C∞g\mathscr{C}_{\infty}\mathfrak{g} the union of the ascending central series of g\mathfrak{g}. Show that a⊂h\mathfrak{a}\subset \mathfrak{h} implies a⊂C∞g\mathfrak{a}\subset \mathscr{C}_{\infty}\mathfrak{g} (in other words C∞g\mathscr{C}_{\infty}\mathfrak{g} is the largest ideal of g\mathfrak{g} contained in h\mathfrak{h}). (Reduce to the case where kk is algebraically closed and remark that a\mathfrak{a} is stable under every elementary automorphism of g\mathfrak{g}; the relation a⊂h\mathfrak{a}\subset \mathfrak{h} then implies that a\mathfrak{a} is contained in every Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}; conclude by means of Exerc. 15 of §2.)
