Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 59

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie algebra, r\mathfrak{r} its radical, n\mathfrak{n} its largest nilpotent ideal and a\mathfrak{a} one of its Levi subalgebras.

a) Put g′=n+Dg\mathfrak{g}'=\mathfrak{n}+\mathscr{D}\mathfrak{g}. Show that g′=n⊕a\mathfrak{g}'=\mathfrak{n}\oplus \mathfrak{a}. (Use the fact that [g,r][\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{r}] is contained in n.\mathfrak{n}.) If g≠0\mathfrak{g}\not= 0, then g′≠0\mathfrak{g}'\not= 0.

b) Assume that kk is algebraically closed. Let (Vi)i∈I(V_i)_{i\in I} be the quotients of a Jordan-Hölder sequence of the g\mathfrak{g}-module g\mathfrak{g} (with the adjoint representation). If x∈rx\in \mathfrak{r}, show that xVix_{V_i} is a homothety and that xVi=0x_{V_i}= 0 for all ii if and only if xx belongs to n\mathfrak{n}. Deduce that an element y∈gy\in \mathfrak{g} belongs to g′\mathfrak{g}' if and only if Tr(yViy_{V_i}) =0= 0 for all i∈Ii\in I.

c) Denote by N the vector subspace of g\mathfrak{g} generated by the elements xx such that ad xx is nilpotent. Show that N is a subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g} (use the fact that N is stable under Aute(g)_e(\mathfrak{g})). Show, by using b), that N⊂g′N\subset \mathfrak{g}'.

d) Let h\mathfrak{h} be a Cartan subalgebra of g\mathfrak{g}. Assume that there exists a subset R of h∗\mathfrak{h}^* such that

g=h⊕⨁α∈Rgα(h) \mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{h}\oplus \bigoplus_{\alpha\in R}\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}(\mathfrak{h})

an assumption which is satisfied, in particular, if kk is algebraically closed. Show that N then contains the gα(h),Dh\mathfrak{g}^{\alpha}(\mathfrak{h}),\mathscr{D}\mathfrak{h} and n\mathfrak{n}; deduce that N contains g′\mathfrak{g}', so N=g′N =\mathfrak{g}'.

e) If kk is algebraically closed and g≠0,g\mathfrak{g}\not= 0,\mathfrak{g} contains an element x≠0x\not= 0 such that ad xx is nilpotent. (Indeed, we then have g′≠0.\mathfrak{g}'\not= 0.)
