Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, VII, 63

Bourbaki marks this one as harder than the rest.

Let g\mathfrak{g} be a Lie subalgebra of gl(V)\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V). Then g\mathfrak{g} is said to be algebraic if, for all x∈gx\in \mathfrak{g}, the replicas of xx (Chap. I, §5, Exerc. 14) belong to g\mathfrak{g}. Such an algebra is decomposable. a) Denote by a(g)a(\mathfrak{g}) the smallest algebraic subalgebra of gl(V)\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}(V) containing g\mathfrak{g}. Then

a(g)⊃e(g)⊃g a(\mathfrak{g})\supset e(\mathfrak{g})\supset \mathfrak{g}

Give an example where a(g)a(\mathfrak{g}) and e(g)e(\mathfrak{g}) are distinct (take V of dimension 2 and g\mathfrak{g} of dimension 1).

b) Show that, if n\mathfrak{n} is an ideal of g,n\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n} and a(n)a(\mathfrak{n}) are ideals of a(g)a(\mathfrak{g}), and [a(g),a(n)]=[g,n][a(\mathfrak{g}), a(\mathfrak{n})] = [\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{n}] (imitate the proof of Prop. 4). Deduce that Dia(g)=Dig\mathscr{D}^ia(\mathfrak{g}) =\mathscr{D}^i\mathfrak{g} for i≥1i\geq 1 and that Cia(g)=Cig\mathscr{C}^ia(\mathfrak{g}) =\mathscr{C}^i\mathfrak{g} for i≥2i\geq 2.

c) Show that every Lie algebra consisting of nilpotent elements is algebraic.8^8
